HERNDON, Va., February 01, 2001 - All across Northern Virginia tomorrow, high school students will participate in the Northern Virginia Technology Council's Job Shadow Day.
The Council has organized a program in which 152 area students will job shadow with executives and technology workers at 70 local technology companies and technology service providers. Job shadowing enables students to shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put into action in the workplace.
"Groundhog Job Shadow Day offers students an excellent opportunity to witness the challenging technology work that goes on right here in Northern Virginia," says NVTC President Bobbie Kilberg. "Also, the shadowing experiences help students make the connection between academic achievement and career planning while informing employers about the technology talent of the students in our local high schools."
"We are thrilled at the excellent response we received this year from area schools and businesses," said Susan Baker, NVTC vice president of workforce. "Our student placements have increased by more than 50% from last year."
Some of the 70 local companies participating in this event include: EDS, VeriSign, Deloitte & Touche, Metrocall, Nortel Networks, TRW, Draper Atlantic, Global Systems & Strategies, Net2000, Lee Technologies, Cyveillance, Dimensions International, DynCorp, Qorvis Communications, Completed Systems, The Staubach Company, Mindbank, Vistronix, and LeapFrog Solutions.
Local schools participating in this event include: Fairfax County Public Schools, Arlington County Public Schools, Manassas City and Manassas Park Public Schools.
Groundhog Job Shadow is part of a nation-wide effort. More than half a million students across America will participate in this program in conjunction with America's Promise: the Alliance for Youth, an organization founded by General Colin Powell.
