Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event, and unique in that it offers an opportunity for communities to take up the fight against cancer. The event is an overnight celebration where teams of 8 -15 people take turns walking, jogging or running relay style around a track day and night. Relay takes place in a festive atmosphere were the teams set up campsites and enjoy food, friendship and entertainment. The serious side to the Relay For Life includes time set aside to focus on those who have lost their lives and those still fighting their battle with cancer. Each Relay includes the Survivors Victory Lap to open the event and the Luminaria (candle lighting) Ceremony just after dusk, a solemn tribute to honor the survivors and those lost to cancer. All Relay For Life activities highlight the importance of the American Cancer Society's mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem through research, education, patient services and advocacy.
